We Must Cry! (Luke 18: 7)

Luke 18: 7: “So don’t you think God will surely give justice to his chosen people who cry out to him day and night? Will he keep putting them off.”

(Mt. 2:18)

For about 400 years the Israelites lived in slavery, they suffered at the expense of the powerful and selfish in Egypt. For about 400 years black folks lived in slavery, they suffered at the expense of the powerful and selfish in America.

They cried... They cried and they called out for justice. God heard their cries and decided to use Moses to guide the people to freedom. Freedom came at a cost. For the Israelites they had a long journey, and they suffered, but they marched. For Moses, he needed to give up his privilege and comfortable life and join the journey, he too had to suffer.

For four hundred years America had slavery, followed by 90 years of segregation trailed by 70 years of unjust housing laws, mass incarceration, police brutality, microagressions, etc. Slavery may have ended but racism has simply changed its face. We must cry.

Racism has affected us all. White folks liberation is tied to black and brown folks liberation, just as Moses' freedom was tied to the Israelites . We all need to cry out for justice. We then need to march, not simply in a protest, but on the long exodus journey towards reconciliation and an authentic relationship with people who are different from us.
